There are rewards to obeying the Word and consequences to disobedience.
I heard a story about Napoleon’s horse been startled and racing away out of control of the famous general. An alert private mounted his horse and quickly brought Napoleon’s horse under control. Napoleon responded “Thank you, Captain.” The soldier was taken aback, yet saluted and snapped, “Thank you, sir.” He immediately headed for his barracks, packed his bags and moved into the officers’ quarters. He requested a new uniform also. By the general’s word his rank was changed. He didn’t argue or question, for the one with authority had spoken. He accepted that authority.
John 2: 1-5 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
Mother of Jesus said do whatever Jesus instructed to do. The Miracles have always come through obedience. The next Miracle will surely come through obedience. It really pleased me very well when my children were obedient. Nothing disappointed me much more than when they disobeyed.
Mt 7: 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity
Obedience is often difficult but the rewards of obedience is great. You may have to be obedient to a boss, a parent, a pastor and definitely to God, but the rewards are promised if we do.
I have heard a story about President Lincoln, that I cannot confirm, but I will share, for what it is worth. During the Civil War Abraham Lincoln met with a group of ministers for a prayer breakfast. At one point one of the ministers suggested that they pray that God would be on their side. Lincoln said for them to pray rather that they would be on God’s side. Instead of praying that God would bless what you do , ask instead that you might do what God is blessing.
I heard of a father who called his five children in. As they sat in a circle on the floor the dad placed a toy on the floor in the middle. He explained that he wanted to give it to one of them. He asked them who was the most obedient. Seeing that none of the five children fully understood, he who obeyed mommy and did everything mommy said. One of the five children picked up the toy and handed it to the father and announced that he had won!
